Drainage design comes before wall design.
Water trapped behind a retaining wall creates hydrostatic pressure that most wall failures actually come from — not the soil itself, but water that had nowhere to go. We install weep holes, gravel backfill, and drainage piping behind every wall we build so pressure never has a chance to build up.
Footing depth and reinforcement are sized to the wall height and the soil report where one is required. Curbs and gutters get the same attention to slope and drainage direction, since a curb that doesn't shed water correctly just moves the problem somewhere else on your property.

East County communities like La Mesa, Spring Valley, and El Cajon have plenty of sloped and terraced lots where a poorly built retaining wall can lead to real property damage if it fails. We size footings and drainage to the actual slope and soil conditions on your property, not a generic standard.
Expansive clay soil common throughout the county adds extra lateral pressure behind walls during wet seasons, which is exactly why the drainage system behind the wall matters as much as the wall itself.

California generally requires a permit and often an engineered plan for retaining walls over about 4 feet — we help you navigate that process.
Engineering lead time
Taller walls may need a soils or structural engineer's sign-off before we can start, which we factor into your timeline upfront.
Days to weeks on site
Simple curb work is quick; taller engineered walls take longer depending on length and height.
06 Keeping It Looking Right
Signs a retaining wall needs attention.
Bulging, leaning, or cracking in a retaining wall usually points to a drainage problem, not just age. Keep weep holes clear of debris and vegetation, and address any pooling water near the base of a wall before it becomes a bigger structural issue.
For curbs, watch for chipping at the edges from vehicle contact and cracking along the length that can indicate base settlement underneath.

Generally yes, above roughly 4 feet in California, and sometimes at lower heights depending on what's above or below the wall. We'll confirm what applies to your specific project.
