01 Licensed (CA #1150542) · Sidewalks & Walkways

Fixing trip hazards, for good.

Most sidewalk problems come back from the same root cause — literally, in a lot of cases. We diagnose why a walkway cracked or heaved before we replace it, so you're not paying for the same repair again in five years.

02 What's Included

Sidewalk and walkway work built to code.

Public-facing sidewalks have to meet city slope, thickness, and joint-spacing standards — not just look flat. We pour to a minimum 4-inch thickness for pedestrian use, cut control joints on proper spacing (typically every 4–5 feet) to manage cracking, and grade every panel so water sheds correctly instead of pooling.

For private walkways connecting your home to a driveway, gate, or backyard, we match the finish and layout to the rest of your property while still building with the same base prep and reinforcement standards we'd use on public work.

03 How We Do It

Our sidewalk & walkway process.

STEP 01

Diagnose the cause

Identify whether roots, soil movement, or poor original grading caused the damage.

STEP 02

Remove & prep

Break out and haul off the damaged panel, address the root cause before repouring.

STEP 03

Form & pour

Set correct slope and joint spacing, pour and finish to match surrounding panels.

STEP 04

Cure & inspect

Cure properly and confirm the panel meets slope and level requirements.

04 San Diego Considerations

Why so many San Diego sidewalks heave and crack.

Mature street trees are one of the most common causes of lifted sidewalk panels across older San Diego neighborhoods. Simply repouring a slab without addressing the root underneath usually means the same panel lifts again within a few years — we install root barriers or reroute the panel layout where it makes sense to actually solve the problem.

Expansive clay soil is the other major factor, especially on properties in La Mesa, Spring Valley, and El Cajon, where seasonal soil movement can crack even a well-poured walkway if the base wasn't compacted correctly the first time.

05 Permits & Timeline

What to expect before and after the pour.

Permits for public sidewalks

Work in the public right-of-way almost always requires a permit and city inspection — we handle that process.

Often responsibility of the owner

Many California cities place sidewalk repair responsibility on the adjacent property owner even though it's public right-of-way. We can help you understand your city's rule.

1–2 days on site

Most sidewalk and walkway repairs are quick, focused jobs completed in a day or two.

06 Keeping It Looking Right

Preventing the next trip hazard.

If you have mature trees near a walkway, periodic root pruning (done correctly, without harming the tree) can slow future lifting. Keep an eye on any panel that starts to tilt even slightly — addressing it early is far cheaper than waiting until it becomes a liability issue.

Keep control joints clear of dirt and plant growth so they can do their job of controlling where cracks form, rather than letting cracks appear randomly across a panel.

When only one or two panels are damaged, we can saw-cut and isolate just those sections instead of tearing out the whole walkway — see our concrete slab cutting service for sidewalk panel replacement.

07 FAQ

Sidewalk and walkway questions we get most.

Am I responsible for repairing the sidewalk in front of my house?

In most San Diego County cities, yes — even though the sidewalk is public right-of-way, the adjacent property owner is typically responsible for keeping it in safe repair. We can help you confirm your specific city's rule.

Will the tree root problem come back if you just repour the slab?

It can, which is why we look at root barriers or adjusting the panel layout rather than just replacing concrete over the same unresolved root.

How quickly can you fix a trip hazard?

Once permitted (if required), most single-panel repairs are a one-day job from removal to finished pour.
